About Relationships

From the very beginning of our lives, we start to form relationships with others, such as parents, brothers, sisters, other family members and carers. We continue doing so through childhood with friends and teachers and through our adult lives with new friends, colleagues and partners. Relationships bring meaning and happiness and have a great deal of positive influence on our lives.

However, relationships can also be a cause of problems in our lives, if there's a lack of communication and understanding, if they are unhealthy or have a negative influence, if they seem not what we really want or we feel like we are drifting apart, or we want to be in a relationship but lack the confidence or struggle to find the right one. As individuals there are many reasons for relationship problems and what might be acceptable and tolerable for one person can be unbearable for another.

If problems aren't addressed, they can build up over time, so there comes a point where we don't know how to resolve them. However, with help, time and determination, people are able to discover how to move forward and enjoy happy, fulfilling relationships.

When do people need help with Relationships?

An unhappy relationship can impact on every other area of your life too leaving you unfulfilled and lacking in confidence. Moving on from a (happy or unhappy) relationship which has ended can be sometimes be so difficult it seems impossible to ever imagine being in a relationship again. Some people struggle to form relationships because they are too shy or because a past experience holds them back. People seek help for many different types and aspects of relationships and at any age, be it relationships with partners, family or friends:-

  • dealing with partner's infidelity
  • confused about whether to stay in a relationship
  • divorce or separation
  • sexual relationship issues
  • confidence meeting and talking to people
  • communication skills
