HYPNOTHERAPY FOR PREGNANCY AND CHILDBIRTH

About Pregnancy and Childbirth

Pregnancy begins with the fertilisation of the woman's egg by the man's sperm and the normal duration for pregnancy is between 37 to 42 weeks. During this time there are of course many changes occurring in the woman's body, so that the baby can grow and be born. Mum's womb and breasts grow, emotions may be up and down, may experience water retention, have increased appetite, go to the toilet more often or be breathless. During early pregnancy up to around 12 weeks, about 50% of mums experience nausea and sickness, although some experience it for longer and about 10% of mums continue after 20 weeks. Mum (and Dad) may be fearful of the birth process, fearful of pain or hospitals, or even stressed about the effect the baby will have on their lives.

Pregnancy and childbirth is a completely normal and natural process and you can learn how to enjoy the whole experience, welcoming the changes and looking forward to being calm and relaxed throughout.

About Fear and Stress

Getting rid of fear and stress is key to having a relaxed, comfortable pregnancy and birth. When you experience fear (about something real or imagined), the body releases stress hormones, which puts your body in defence mode. Extra oxygen is delivered to parts of the body useful for defence and as this excludes your birthing muscles, oxygen supply to them is limited, so preventing the relaxation of these muscles. Therefore, if fear occurs during birthing, the birthing muscles perform much less effectively and this can lead to slower, painful births. Research has found that from 17 weeks onwards, the stress hormone can be found in the amniotic fluid in the same levels as in the mum, so if you are stressed, your baby is too. With the aid of hypnosis, you can eliminate fear and tension, remain relaxed and stimulate the release of endorphins, which are your body's natural feel-good hormones and have an effect 200 times that of morphine!
