HYPNOTHERAPY FOR PHOBIAS & FEARS

About Phobias and Fears

A phobia is an intense but irrational or unrealistic fear which can interfere with your ability to socialize, work or go about everyday life. It is estimated that around 10 million people in the UK have phobias and they can affect anyone of any age. Simple phobias usually start around age four and can disappear on their own as the child gets older, but complex phobias usually start later in life and can continue for many years if untreated.

Simple phobias are usually very specific fears about animals, objects or situations and some common examples are spiders, dogs, mice/rats, enclosed spaces, flying, dentists and needles. However, complex phobias are usually associated with a deep-rooted fear of being in certain circumstances, such as Agoraphobia which is fear of open spaces of public places and Social Phobia, a fear of social situations or performing in social situations, such as public speaking, weddings and being with groups of people.

What Happens when you have a Phobia?

Phobias can be caused by learning the phobia from someone else who also has the phobia, e.g. a child sees a parent frightened of spiders and also becomes frightened. They can also be caused by a frightening or stressful experience, which results in a phobia immediately or in later life. The cause of some phobias is not consciously known, but could be due to lack of confidence, a seemingly unrelated event or even brain chemistry.

You may find yourself avoiding any situation which has any possibility of putting you in contact with your phobia, making it impossible to live normally. You may find pictures, films or even the thought of coming into contact with the source of your phobia cause you anxiety and panic. People react in different ways to their phobias, with some just feeling mild anxiety while others suffer severe anxiety and panic attacks.

There are many symptoms that may be experienced by someone who has a phobic reaction and some of these include difficulty breathing, rapid heartbeat, sweating, nausea, feeling faint, feeling disgusted or dirty towards source of phobia, confusion, crying, tense muscles and blurred vision.
