Confidence is how you feel about your ability to do things and self-esteem is how you feel about yourself and your self-worth, but they are often simply grouped together as self-confidence. Self-confidence is a basic human need and everyone needs a good level of self-confidence in order to be happy and do the things we want to do.
Some people are naturally very confident and you may have noticed how they just seem to take knock-backs in their stride or even see it as a way of learning what they can do to succeed. However, if you are one of the many people who generally have low self-confidence, you probably think there is no way you could ever be like that and wonder just how they do it. Or, it could be that that most of the time you are self-confident, but there are just certain times or certain situations, where you could do with a confidence boost or need to be more assertive.
What Happens when you have Low Confidence or Self Esteem?
Lack of confidence is often the reason for many other problems and difficulties and can have a wide ranging effect on our lives. People will continue to remain in jobs, relationships or any other situations that cause them distress and unhappiness, because they think they are not capable of or not good enough to do something different, often believing even the smallest change is completely out of their reach. You may even find you are adequately confident in some areas of your life, but completely go to pieces in other areas.
If you have low self-confidence you may find you avoid certain situations, or feel trapped and become nervous, sweaty, blush easily and profusely, 'freeze', are unable to think clearly and/or unable to speak. Other effects may include overeating to avoid being found attractive, commitment issues, social anxiety and the development of fears and phobias such as agoraphobia, fear of driving, fear of vomiting, etc.

Causes of low confidence or self-esteem might be past experiences, the way your parents, teachers or friends treated you, or a specific event which caused you embarrassment or considerable discomfort. But why is it that some people are really affected and some are not? When you know how to control the way you think about these things, you are able to control the way you feel and behave, so you are positive and confident in any situation.
